Listening

The listening is a basic ability for learning, besides being closely related to oral expression, it is very important to stimulate this in the child’s first stages of life. The following exercise help to enhance listening abilities. It is recommended to practice them as a “game”, showing a lot of interest in what the children are doing and participating actively and being a model for them.

*Cover your child’s eyes, make sounds with different objects (bells, whistles, rattles, etc.). Ask the children to identify the sounds.

*Listen to different kinds of music, such as: instrumental, classical, etc. and encourage them to move to the rhythm.

*Listen the TV or radio in a low volume.

*Talk in a soft voice, making voice reflex ions (surprise, happiness, anger, sadness) and ask your child what you are feeling.

*Try telling stories emphasizing intonation and environment sounds (wind, rain, thunder, falling objects, etc.)

*Play imitating voices and sounds.

*Record your child’s voice and play it back to him or her.

*Record the family’s voices and ask your child to recognize who is talking.

*Give instructions, pre-recorded or orally and ask your child to follow the directions. For example: “go to your room and bring one ball and one t-shirt”.

*Listen to audio stories.

*Listen to the different sounds in the environment like a vacuum cleaner, mixer, ambulance siren, automobile horns, etc.

*Play games like bingo without showing the card that has been chosen.

*Listen to different sounds and repeat them.

*Tell him/her words (start with 1) and ask him to repeat them.

*Repeat sounds sequences. Ex. Ring a bell, clap 2 times and ask the child to repeat what he/she has heard.

*Cover his/her eyes and ring a bell or another sound object and ask him/her to follow the sound.
